The San Martiño Fair is held every 11 November in the Carballeira de Francos, in the parish of Calo. Specialising in the sale of horses, mules and donkeys, it is undoubtedly a unique manifestation of popular culture and the Galician livestock economy, with a strong, proven, historical tradition. This date, of particular significance for the Municipality of Teo, has been declared a local holiday thanks to its importance in the region. It is one of the most important dates in the Compostela area’s residents festive and affective calendar, like Easter in Padrón, San Marcos in Noia, and the Ascension in Santiago. It was attested for the first time in 1557 in old notarial protocols that include tax documents relating to the payment of ‘alcabalas’, taxes levied on commercial horse transactions at the fair, and which had to be paid half by the buyer and half by the seller. The fair arose at this spot as Francos was blessed with a unique geographical and administrative situation. Francos was located alongside of the main routes running through Galicia from north to south. A crossroads that since Roman times, then during the Middle Ages and throughout the Modern Age, has linked the Rias Baixa with Compostela, and the Lands of the Ulla with the Costa da Morte.
