Located at a crossroads in the parish of Luou, the Church gives its name to the cluster of houses surrounding it.

The current church is located where the Chapel of Santa Margarita once stood, and which had been moved from Loureiro, but soon became too small, so the priest and the villagers decided to build a new one. The process of building the church as we know it today was a long process, involving many years and reforms. It began with the refurbishment of the chapel dating back to 1788, when the construction commenced, until 1832 when it is finished.

The current church of Santa María de Luou dates from the mid-19th century. The tower was built by the master stonemasons, Francisco Casal and Juan Casal. The latter also built the church of Bamonde and the chapel of Santa Eufemia de Oza, both also in the municipality of Teo. In 1872, the tower of the Church in Luou, from the bells up, was destroyed by a bolt of lightning, and it was rebuilt a year later, as attested by a sundial placed on the south side of the Church.

In the vicinity of the Church of Santa Maria de Luou we find the fountain of the Saint Margaret, which dates back to 1816, and where it is frequent, particularly in the month of July, to find people ‘washing away their evils’ as this saint protects against evil and diseases of the skin.

Also nearby is the “Luou farmers and stockbreeders union” building, constructed in 1905 with funds from parishioners who had emigrated in America and which was, and still is, centre for the cultural dynamisation of the parish.
