This is a stretch of the River Ulla as it passes through O Xirimbao, in the parish of Reis, where fishing is regulated under the catch-and-release fishing regime.
Located on the course of the River Ulla (protected by the Natura 2000 Network) and known as the Couso Preserve, as it takes its name from the parish in the neighbouring municipality of A Estrada, is the Xirimbao, which is subject to the catch-and-release fishing regime. Built in the 1940s, it transformed one of the Ulla's traditional “pesqueiras” into a dam to facilitate the sport of salmon fishing, completely changing the appearance of this stretch of the river, which remains to this day.
Its upper limit is the dam, and the lower limit is 100 m downstream from Fernández Rock. In total, 800 m of a preserve that belongs to Teo and A Estrada. It has six daily permits.
This fishing complex is completed with a fishing shelter and a sealing centre. Particularly noteworthy today is the size of two sequoias (Secuoia sempervivens) planted near the shelter in the early 1960s, which now reach a height of 5 metres, pyramidal in shape and of great ornamental value.
With the arrival of good weather, the Couto Preserve is transformed into a recreational area for thousands of people from all over the region, largely due to the existence of an adjacent recreational area and also to the opening, during the fishing season, of the Mariola Bridge. On the riverbank, the Ulla Lamprey Trail passes through the Couso fishing preserve.
