Recreational area on the banks of the River Ulla with access to several hiking trails and services necessary to spend a picnic day.
Located on the banks of the River Ulla, within the European Natura 2000 Network protection zone, the O Xirimbao recreational area has parking areas for vehicles, an area to spend the night in motor homes, stone tables and benches under the shade of the trees, and a grass area. It has public baths.
The entire length of the Ulla riverbank is well known to anglers. Alongside the area is the Couso Fishing Preserve, highly recommended for salmon fishing (it is in fact one of the most important salmon preserves in Galicia). O Xirimbao is also signposted within the Lamprey trail, which has been fished in the area since ancient times; in fact, there are still “pesqueiras”, which are large quadrangular blocks formed by stones aligned perpendicular to the current crossing almost the entire river except for the central current. Nets, or “copos” are placed in the corridors between the blocks –called “pesqueiros” or “cangallas” (“poios” on the River Miño). Those lampreys that fail to overcome the strong current fall into the net and the force of the water prevents them from getting out.
Close by there is a suspension bridge, the Mariola Bridge, which connects the parish of Reis en Teo, with the parish of Couso in A Estrada and which can be crossed during the fishing season, which is when it is open.
